In the world where this story unfolds, most living creatures other than humans have become extinct.  Much of the population is governed by a socialist regime whose ideology is based on an extreme form of communism.  Mechanical butterflies were released into the wild to serve as both a political propaganda tool as well as free roaming spies.

Another source of inspiration came from a legend I once read about a Russian czar who was given a mechanical dancing flea by English smiths. Not to be outdone, The Russian smiths subsequently built tiny little boots for the flea to prove their skill in primitive “nano” technology.

In the end, I believe the idea of a little boy showing his younger sister the killing jar was an interesting way of looking at moment of daily life within the boundaries of this world.
